General Facts About Miswak
Miswak is a twig made out of root of Salvadora Persica tree and it is used to clean teeth. It has long existance in Muslim history and it is known from Hadith that Mohammed s.a.w.s. himself recommended using miswak five times a day.
Were it not that I might over-burden the Believers I would have ordered them to use Siwak (Miswak) at the time of every Prayer
So here we can see that Prophet recommended using miswak at the time of every Prayer, which when translated looks like this.
There are five Muslim Prayers every day and using miswak at the time of every one of them means using miswak five times a day.
This is reliable source because this hadith was passed by one of most reliable Hadith passers of them all.
In 2003. a study was coducted an the results were in favour of Siwak (Miswak). The studies showed that using miswak correctly had much better cleaning properties than normal toothbrush. In fact World Health Organization (WHO) recommended the use of miswak, but they said that further research was needed to document the effect of miswak, and of course that further research never happened. And another researcher called Dr. Mohammed Diabi confirmed the effect of miswak, in fact he'd spent his last 17 years researching miswak, especially its anti-addiction properties and effects. He has opened a new field of science and research with his new publication called "Miswak Medicine theory". The only study that isn't in favour of miswak over normal teeth cleaning is one saying that miswak's extract isn't effective as anitmicrobat as some other anti-plaque agents such as Triclosane or Chlorhexidine Gluconate. But let's not get carried away by fancy names, because let's not forget that these chemicals in large quantities are extremly dangerous, not just to man but to the enviroment. One of the most amazing properties of Siwak is that when you use it, it create sort of "fragrance effect" in your mouth which eliminates bad smells.
Miswak twig should be about 15 cm long. When you want to use it, if it had dried earlyer it would be best to soak it in rose water or normal water. When finished using miswak it should be stored in closed containers to insure it stays dry or else it will start to rot. It should be never stored close to sink or toilet just to ensure it doesn't go bad. There is also a toothpaste made out of miswak, but it needs to be remebered that it doesn't have almost any of miswak's cleaning or any other properties. Essentialy it's a normal tooth paste with miswak smell and taste. But some companies today are trying to pack miswak into modern packages to ensure it has a shelf life up to 6 months. Recently there was a startup project called " THIS toothbrush" which according to the designer's words redesigns and reintroduces ancient teeth cleaning technique.
